mandatory military service in Israel
In Israel, most of the citizens are drafted into the military at the age of 18. Men are required to serve at least three years while women are required to serve at least two to three years. After their mandatory service is complete, the men join the reserve forces and usually do up to several weeks of service a year until their forties. Most of the women are exempt from this though. Also Arab citizens of Israel (except for the Druze) and those participating in full-time religious studies are exempt from the draft.

I wasn't aware of Israel's military draft! That's heartbreaking, you should not have to focus on something like that when you're so young.
ReplyDeleteI never knew Israel had a mandatory military draft for everyone in the country. Interesting to read about.
ReplyDeleteThat is the craziest thing I have ever heard! No one should be forced to do something they don't want to do.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it sounds crazy to us, it's actually something of a bonding experience for these young adults. Many of them go into the military with friends and people that they grew up with and many of them even meet their future spouses while serving! It's definitly different than what we're used to in the states but in Israel it's just a part of life, like a right of passage. It also builds character and teaches them responsibility, respect and all kinds of useful skills that they will take with them throughout their lives. 18 can be such a confusing age for many people so in a way it can actually be a very helpful experience:-)
ReplyDeleteWow, such a young age and 3 years is a long time!
